Grizzly Bears, Chilko Lake, B.C, Day to Night™ 2022
Chilko Lake, a 55-mile expanse in west-central British Columbia, is one of the largest lakes in the Southern Coast Mountains and holds both ecological and historical significance. Each fall, millions of salmon return to spawn at the river’s mouth, creating a vital food source for grizzly bears—a species classified as being of special concern, teetering on the edge of risk.
In the fall of 2022, I traveled to Bear Camp on Chilko Lake to witness this remarkable event. Over three days, I watched as grizzlies and their cubs feasted on what seemed like an endless supply of salmon, an awe-inspiring display of nature’s delicate balance.
